Enhancing Security in X-Road for e-Government at RECSI 2026
Within the framework of the 19th Spanish Meeting on Cryptology and Information Security (RECSI 2026), held at the University of La Laguna (Tenerife) from 17 to 21 March, Víctor Figueroa, Head of e-Government Services in Neuquén (Argentina), lecturer at Universidad Siglo21 and researcher in the Security and Auditing Group (GSyA) at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, presented the paper “Extending X-Road with Metaservice Code Validation: A Security-Oriented Contribution”.
The study analyses a vulnerability in the X-Road interoperability framework, widely used in e-Government environments, which allowed the misuse of identifiers reserved for internal metaservices, leading to potential security risks and operational conflicts. As a solution, an integrated validation mechanism is proposed to prevent the use of these reserved codes, thereby reinforcing system integrity and enhancing the security of digital services. The contribution is framed within the GAUCHO framework and has been incorporated into the official X-Road repository.
The proposal was positively received for its practical impact and its applicability to critical digital government infrastructures.
